Three of Batons

Am I so dear?
Do I run rare?
And you’ve changed some:
peach, plum, pear.

Joanna Newsom, “Peach, Plum, Pear” (The Milk-Eyed Mender, 2004)

Image Description

Three fruits sit on an oval of red and yellow gingham in green grass: a green pear, a pink peach, and a purple plum.

Interpretation

Growing up and going out inevitably brings some disappointments. The transition from the Two of Batons to the Three represents the difficult passage from theoretical to practical knowledge, as in the lyric, “I have read the right books to interpret your looks…” But on the surface this is also a card of enjoyment, a trio of fruits that make a picnic.
