The King of Swords is based on Stańczyk, the celebrated medieval Polish hero. This depiction in particular is from Jan Matejko’s painting.
A jester holding a sword sits in a chair in front of a curtain, looking back over his shoulder. The jester wears mainly red. He has a three-pointed hat with bells and a short cloak over a tight-fitting outfit. His red legging are buttoned over his pointy blue shoes. He holds a red sword up in his right hand, and has a white recorder in his left hand. To his right, there is a green table with a letter and a quill pen in an inkwell. An orange and purple lute rests against the left side of his chair. A magpie perches on the back of the chair over the jester’s left shoulder.
